Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

There are plenty of ways to stay safe while enjoying a spooky Halloween!

When you’re a kid, nothing quite compares to Halloween. You get to be whatever you want and adults just give you candy — what could be better than that? Kids love Halloween, and there are lots of things you can do to keep them safe while trick-or-treating. The following is a list from our daycare in Fremont of safety tips for trick-or-treaters:

#1. Be Visible

Anytime you are walking around outside at night, you need to make sure that you are clearly visible, and Halloween night is no exception. Dress your kids in bright colors so that they can easily be seen. You could also sew reflective strips into your child’s costume.

#2. Go Out Earlier

If your children are smaller, you may benefit from going out earlier this year. Who says you have to go after dark to celebrate Halloween? By going earlier in the day, you’ll have less traffic and fewer people to deal with.

#3. Stay Close to Home

If possible, stay in your own neighborhood when you go trick-or-treating. This way, if your child needs to go to the restroom or gets too scared, you could simply knock on a friendly neighbor’s door rather than having to derail the entire night.

#4. Inspect All Candy

Make sure that your child knows not to eat any candy until you have had a chance to inspect it. Every individual piece of candy should be wrapped and unopened, and any pieces that aren’t should be thrown away.
