How to Teach Your Kids About Compassion

The holiday season is the perfect time of the year to teach your kids about compassion.

The holidays are all about giving, compassion and love, but unfortunately, these things often get overlooked. In this day and age, more people are concerned about where to buy holiday gifts and what they will make for dinner than the plight of those less fortunate, and this is all the more reason to teach your kids about compassion. Teaching your kids how to be compassionate will help your entire family focus on the true meaning of the season! The following is a list of tips from our preschool in Fremont, CA to help you teach your kids about compassion:

#1. Practice being deliberately kind to others.

A little kindness can go a long way, and while random acts of kindness can be fun, deliberate kindness is a choice you have to make every day. Things, like opening the door for a stranger or letting a stranger in a hurry cut in line at the grocery store, can show your child that just a little kindness can make someone’s day.

#2. Be compassionate at home.

Before you punish your child when they are misbehaving, practice a little compassion. Take a few moments to consider your child’s feelings and thoughts rather than handing out consequences right away. Practicing compassion at home will help your kids to practice compassion when they get out in the real world.

#3. Volunteer as a family.

Volunteering as a family is a great way to show your child that there are people out there who are less fortunate than them. It is also a great way to demonstrate what a big difference a little bit of compassion can make.
