How to Encourage Language Development

Parents play an essential role in a child’s language development.

If you want your child to be successful in their relationships, school and even career, language development is of the utmost importance. During the first few years of a child’s life, their brains are rapidly learning and developing, which makes it the ideal time to start developing their language skills. Your interactions with your child play a major role in the development of their language skills, and our Fremont daycare has come up with this list of tips to help you nurture your toddler’s language development:

#1. Talk to your child.

Talk to your toddler as much as possible, even if you have to narrate your day for them. The more you talk to your child, the better.

#2. Read to your child.

Reading books to your child will not only help to develop their language skills, it’ll also help their future reading success. Studies have shown that the amount of time that parents spend reading to their kids is a predictor of reading success in the future.

#3. Listen to music with your child.

Music is an incredibly fun way to help your child develop their language skills. It allows them to dance and sing while they are learning about rhyming and language!

#4. Treat ear infections quickly.

An untreated ear infection could put your toddler at risk for a loss of hearing, which could lead to language delays. Get your child treated at the first sign of an ear infection.

#5. Let your child lead the way.

If your child is particularly interested in something specific, follow their lead and talk to them about it. When they babble to you, talk back!
